3D Printer Maintenance Checklist
Most print failures are maintenance failures in disguise. This routine keeps quality high and frustration low.
Weekly checklist (10-20 minutes)
1) Clean the print bed
Why it matters: oils and dust reduce first-layer adhesion, causing warping and failed prints.
How: Let bed cool, apply isopropyl alcohol to microfiber cloth, wipe in overlapping strokes, let dry.
2) Wipe nozzle tip
Why it matters: buildup causes blobs, stringing, and uneven extrusion.
How: Warm nozzle to print temp, use a brass brush gently around the tip.
3) Check belt tension
Why it matters: loose belts cause ringing and shifts.
How: Belts should feel firm-not floppy, not over-tight.
Monthly checklist (20-40 minutes)
1) Re-check bed leveling / Z-offset
Why it matters: small drift hurts first-layer consistency.
How: Run leveling, print a first-layer test, fine-tune until smooth and lightly fused.
2) Clean fans and vents
Why it matters: dust reduces cooling and can impact electronics lifespan.
How: Power off printer, use compressed air/soft brush to clear dust.
3) Replace worn nozzle (if needed)
Why it matters: worn nozzles cause inconsistent extrusion and poor detail.
How: Heat hotend, remove old nozzle carefully, install new, recalibrate first layer.
Quick win: Before changing slicer settings, check bed cleanliness, first layer, and nozzle condition.
