3D Printing Troubleshooting Decision Tree (Fast Diagnosis)

Troubleshooting Decision Tree

Use this quick flow when a print fails. Start with the visible symptom and work downward.

If the first layer won’t stick

  1. Clean plate with isopropyl alcohol
  2. Lower Z-offset slightly
  3. Increase bed temp by 5°C
  4. Slow first layer to 15–25 mm/s
  5. Add brim if needed

If you see stringing

  1. Lower nozzle temp 5°C
  2. Increase retraction slightly
  3. Improve travel moves/combing
  4. Dry filament

If layers look weak or split

  1. Raise nozzle temp modestly
  2. Reduce fan for high-temp materials
  3. Check flow/extrusion multiplier
  4. Verify filament is dry

If dimensions are off

  1. Calibrate e-steps/flow first
  2. Check belt tension and axis play
  3. Use compensation only after mechanics are stable

Rule for Faster Fixes

Change one variable, print a short test, log result, repeat. That single habit prevents endless trial-and-error.
