Printer Setup & Calibration Fundamentals
If your first layer is unreliable, everything downstream becomes frustrating. This guide gives you a repeatable setup sequence you can use on most FDM printers.
Quick Start Checklist
- Square and tighten frame hardware before first print.
- Set correct belt tension (firm, not guitar-string tight).
- Update firmware and reset slicer profile to known baseline.
- Run bed leveling/tramming, then set Z-offset carefully.
- Print a first-layer test and adjust in small increments.
What Actually Matters Most
Z-offset, clean build surface, and bed mesh consistency solve most beginner failures. Avoid changing 10 settings at once; change one variable and re-test.
Calibration Sequence (Use in Order)
- First-layer square test
- Flow/extrusion multiplier check
- Temperature tower for your filament
- Retraction mini test
- 20 mm calibration cube
Common Mistakes
- Using old/moist filament during calibration
- Skipping bed cleaning between attempts
- Over-tightening eccentric nuts and causing drag
- Trying to tune speed before first layer is stable
Result: reliable first layers and fewer failed prints before you start tuning for speed.
